Sign on statement: CF clinicians & health professionals for global access to modulators!
We, the undersigned, are clinicians, health professionals and scientists. We lead cystic fibrosis (CF) centres, conduct basic and clinical research, and work directly with patients and families affected by the disease. Many of us have dedicated our careers to improving the lives of those with CF.
We are united in our belief that every cystic fibrosis patient in every country has an equitable right to life and access to lifesaving CFTR modulator treatment.
We note with deep dismay, the disparity in access to modulator treatments in the global north and global south, with only a handful of low or middle income countries having secured an agreement with Vertex to supply their patients with the best-in-class combination therapy, elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor (Trikafta/Kaftrio).
It is clear that Vertex’s pricing strategy represents a formidable barrier to universal access to treatment. The development of Triko, a high-quality generic version of elexacaftor, tezacaftor and ivacaftor produced by the Bangladeshi generic company Beximco, will enable thousands of patients to finally access the lifesaving medication they need at a price that is just a few percent of Vertex’s US list price. This is the breakthrough the CF community has been waiting for.
We have seen first hand the devastating and painful suffering cystic fibrosis inflicts on patients who are unable to access effective treatment. Therefore we are calling on Vertex to step aside and allow patients to access this vital medication. Vertex must drop their patents in countries that do not have access and take steps to facilitate access to this sustainable source of affordable treatment. CFTR modulators are listed on the WHO essential medicine list, they are a lifesaving medication and it is imperative that they reach patients hands as soon as possible.
